The espadrille was born here, between the Pyrenees and the ocean, and Bayona has been crafting them in Saint-Jean-de-Luz with a single goal: to stay true to the original while evolving the design. They all share the same signature features: the braided jute rope sole, high-quality materials, and comfort that lasts all summer long.

What makes a true espadrille?

An espadrille is recognized by its braided rope sole, sewn to the upper. At Bayona, this natural rope is lined with a non-slip rubber layer to provide traction on both cobblestones and sand. The upper is made of cotton canvas, supple leather, or suede calfskin, depending on the style. No excessive glue, no unnecessary synthetic materials: a well-made espadrille molds to your foot, breathes, and is repurchased every summer more for pleasure than out of necessity.

Espadrilles originated in the Pyrenees, and it was in the Basque Country—particularly in Mauléon and Saint-Jean-de-Luz—that they were first mass-produced and then refined beginning in the 19th century. Bayona carries on this tradition from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, offering both traditional hand-sewn espadrilles and contemporary styles.

How do I choose the right size for espadrilles?

Choose your usual size for leather styles. For traditional canvas styles, choose a snug fit—or even half a size smaller if you're unsure: the canvas and rope will stretch and mold to your foot after the first few wears.

How do you care for espadrilles?

Dry-brush the shoes, clean any stains with a slightly damp sponge and mild soap, and let them air dry—never in the dryer or near a heat source. Avoid getting the rope sole wet: it absorbs water and may lose its shape.
