Passionate creators
Bayona reimagines the espadrille with a contemporary twist, drawing on artisanal expertise passed down for over a century.
Each design strikes a balance between tradition and modernity, where craftsmanship remains central, yet forms, materials, and uses evolve with the times. The collections reflect a constant pursuit of perfection: precise cuts, lasting comfort, and meticulous finishes.
Through the interplay of textures, a careful selection of materials, and meticulous attention to detail, we offer espadrilles that remain true to Basque heritage while meeting today’s standards for style, comfort, and durability.
Our History
Since 1890, Bayona has carried on the tradition of Basque espadrilles through meticulous artisanal craftsmanship.
The story begins in Bidache, in the Adour Valley, when Jules Victor founded a small workshop. After spending his days working in the quarries, he would handcraft espadrilles. This connection to craftsmanship, hard work, and precision laid the foundation for the Bayona identity.
Over the decades, the family workshop grew. In 1922, his sons settled in Bayonne, gradually establishing the company’s local roots. Bayona then established itself as a leader in the industry, recognized for the quality of its work and its consistently high standards.
In the 1970s, the brand collaborated with prestigious fashion houses such as Sonia Rykiel, Coco Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent.
This period marked a turning point: the espadrille became a fashion staple in its own right, combining comfort, elegance, and artisanal craftsmanship.
A family tradition
Committed to this legacy, Pierre Larralde, a former employee of the company, acquired the brand with the aim of preserving it.
His son Nicolas grew up immersed in this world, in the family shop on Rue Gambetta in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, developing a deep understanding of the product, the craftsmanship, and customer expectations from a very early age.
In 2016, Nicolas and Alexandra took over the Bayona brand together with a clear goal: to modernize the espadrille without ever losing sight of its artisanal roots.
Their approach is based on a simple principle: to offer sustainable, stylish sneakers that are suited to today’s lifestyle, while maintaining high standards for materials, design, and comfort.
A vision: tradition and evolution
The brand preserves the identity of handcrafted espadrilles while incorporating innovations in comfort, construction, and design, all crafted to ensure each model remains relevant to its time.
